The Journey of Relationship

Watch back this sermon here.

Key Thought:

Our relationship with God is designed to mature and deepen over time.

1. Walk Before God as His Son/Daughter

Genesis 17:1

"I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless."

Key Scriptures:

  • Genesis 17:1

  • Romans 8:14–17

  • Galatians 4:6–7

  • 1 John 3:1–3

  • Ephesians 5:1–2

Key Points:

  • Identity is the foundation of our walk with God.

  • We do not obey to become children; we obey because we are children.

  • God calls us to holiness, not self-made righteousness.

Takeaway:

My identity is rooted in being a child of God.

2. Walk After God as His Servant

Deuteronomy 13:4

"You shall walk after the Lord your God..."

Key Scriptures:

  • Deuteronomy 13:4

  • Luke 9:23

  • John 12:26

  • Philippians 2:5–8

Key Points:

  • Jesus modeled servanthood.

  • Servanthood flows from sonship.

  • A bondservant serves willingly out of love.

Takeaway:

We do not serve hoping God will love us; His love compels us to serve.

3. Walk With God as His Friend

John 15:15

"I have called you friends..."

Key Scriptures:

  • Genesis 5:21–24

  • Micah 6:8

  • John 15:13–15

  • James 2:21–23

  • Exodus 33:11

Key Points:

  • Friendship with God is a deeper level of intimacy.

  • Friends know one another's heart.

  • Friendship grows through trust, obedience, and relationship.

Takeaway:

Friendship with God is about living a life where His Presence is central.

4. Walk In God as the Body of Christ

John 15:4–5

"Abide in Me, and I in you."

Key Scriptures:

  • Acts 17:28

  • John 15:4–5

  • Colossians 1:27

  • 1 Corinthians 12:13–14, 27

  • Galatians 2:20

Key Points:

  • The New Covenant offers more than proximity—it offers union.

  • Christ lives in us.

  • We are joined together as His Body.

Takeaway:

Apart from Christ we can do nothing.

The Journey of Relationship

The Process of Maturity

  1. Walk Before God → Identity is formed.

  2. Walk After God → Obedience is formed.

  3. Walk With God → Intimacy is formed.

  4. Walk In God → Union and Corporate Expression are formed.

Final Takeaways

  • Servanthood without sonship becomes striving.

  • Sonship without servanthood becomes entitlement.

  • Friendship without obedience becomes sentimentalism.

  • Union without sonship, service, and friendship becomes a life we talk about but do not live out.

Remember:

  • We do not serve to become sons; we serve because we are sons.

  • We do not pursue intimacy to gain status; we pursue Him because love desires nearness.

  • Our union with Christ produces Christlike expression in the world.
